In recognition of April being distracted driving awareness month, here are a few tips to help you focus on the road and stop being a distracted driver.

6 Tips to Prevent Distracted Driving

  1. Turn off your phone or place it on silent. Good ways to avoid using your cell phone while driving is to turn it off or place it out of your reach until you arrive at your destination. Cell phone use has been a contributing factor to distracted driving and has led to the “no texting” law in many states, including Georgia.
  2. Finish your personal grooming at home. We understand that you want to look your best, but finishing your make-up, floss your teeth, or attack that zit before you get into the car.
  3. Avoid multi-tasking by organizing your stuff before you drive off . Setup your GPS route before you get on the road. Doing this beforehand can ensure you input the correct information for your destination and don’t get lost.
  4. Save serious talks for later. It’s important not to lose yourself in stressful thoughts or serious conversations when you’re behind the wheel. Driving and focusing on the road is your task at hand, so you should save the “we need to talk” moments for later.
  5. Avoid eating or drinking while driving. It may seem like a good idea to grab a bite to eat on your way to a meeting, but food spills are a major distraction when driving. What’s more important, your morning coffee or your safety?
  6. Limit the number of passengers in the car with you. By limiting the number of passengers in the car, you can reduce the activity level inside the car. Driving with friends can often create dangerous driving environment, especially for teenage drivers who focus on their friends rather than the road.

Take your time driving and focus on the road. When you get behind the wheel of a car the entire object is to keep yourself and your passengers safe on the road.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 8 people are killed each day in the United States and 1,161 are injured in car crashes that involve a distracted driver.  Don’t let a stupid text be your last words. Keep your eyes on the road.
